​In the May of 2015 I bought a Geiger kit online, which basically is a microprocessor (an ATmega328p in this case) plus all the electronics need to power (HV) and interface with a GM tube. It came with mostly through-hole components, and included a LCD screen.

I then bought a SBT-11A Russian GM tube on eBay. I chose the SBT-11A because it is pretty sensitive in detecting alpha radiation, in addition to beta and gamma radiation. I spent about an hour soldering all the components together.
